چکیده

An iterative method is presented that allows one to retrieve the Green’s function originating from a virtual source located inside a medium using reflection data measured only at the acquisition surface. In addition to the reflection response, an estimate of the travel times corresponding to the direct arrivals is required. However, no detailed information about the heterogeneities in themedium is needed. The iterative scheme generalizes the Marchenko equation for inverse scattering to the seismic reflection problem. To give insight in the mechanism of the iterative method, its steps for a simple layered medium are analyzed using physical arguments based on the stationary phase method. The retrieved Green’s wavefield is shown to correctly contain the multiples due to the inhomogeneities present in the medium. Additionally, a variant of the iterative scheme enables decomposition of the retrieved wavefield into its downgoing and upgoing components. These wavefields then enable creation of a ghost-free image of the medium with either cross correlation or multidimensional deconvolution, presenting an advantage over standard prestack migration.

Data-driven Green’s function retrieval and imaging with multidimensional deconvolution: numerical examples for reflection data with internal multiples

Standard imaging techniques rely on the single scattering assumption. This requires that the recorded data do not include internal multiples, i.e. waves bouncing multiple times between layers before reaching the receivers at the acquisition surface. When multiple reflections are present in the data, standard imaging algorithms incorrectly image them as ghost reflectors. These artifacts can misl...

Strategies for imaging with Marchenko-retrieved Green’s functions

Recent papers show that imaging with the retrieved Green’s function constructed by the Marchenko equations, called Marchenko imaging, reduces the artifacts from internal and free-surface multiples compared to standard imaging techniques. Even though the artifacts are reduced, they can still be present in the image, depending on the imaging condition used. We show that when imaging with the upan...

Seismic interferometry by crosscorrelation and by multidimensional deconvolution: a systematic comparison

Seismic interferometry, also known as Green’s function retrieval by crosscorrelation, has a wide range of applications, ranging from surface-wave tomography using ambient noise, to creating virtual sources for improved reflection seismology. Despite its successful applications, the crosscorrelation approach also has its limitations. The main underlying assumptions are that the medium is lossles...

Wave field autofocusing and applications to multidimensional deconvolution and imaging with internal multiples

One of the most challenging tasks of exploration geophysics is to build a quantitatively accurate image of the structures inside the Earth from reflection data measured at the Earth’s surface. When the subsurface is structurally complicated, accurate images are needed to locate energy sources, such as hydrocarbon reservoirs. Conventional migration algorithms rely on the single-scattering assump...
